For the first time since a May 29 Jet Ski accident left him in critical condition, Sean Kingston made a public appearance at the Teen Choice Awards 2011 on Sunday. The Universal City, Calif. award show was the first opportunity for the Jamaican-American singer to grace a red carpet since the accident.
When Kingston made his way on stage to present his friend Justin Bieber with an award for Choice Male artist, he was given a standing ovation. Just a few months ago Kingston broke his jaw, fractured his wrist, and required three bouts of surgery, including one heart surgery.
Kingston told MTV News: “I had open heart surgery and I had two other surgeries; it was a life-or-death situation."
Leading up to his first Hollywood appearance since the accident, Kingston has recounted the horrid details of his accident in the press. In an interview with MTV Networks, the singer said he learned from his accident.
“What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings,” Kingston told MTV last week. “You just got to keep God present at all times and think about the consequences.”
According to The Huffington Post, Kingston learned of his heart condition after being treated to accident related injuries. Although 90 percent of people do not make it home from the heart operations that the singer underwent, Kingston said he owes all of his recovery to a higher power.
